Isotopes are different versions of the same element. They have the same number of protons and electrons but they have a different number of neutrons.
This can make them heavier so they will have a different mass number

Carbon-12 has a mass number of 12. It has 6 protons, 6 electrons and 6 neutrons.
Carbon-14 has a mass number of 14. It has 6 protons and 6 electrons but it is 2 heavier so it must have 2 more neutrons. It has 8 neutrons.
Some isotopes are radioactive. These elements are not as stable and can give of radiation. Carbon-14 for example can break down and become Carbon-12 over time. It just needs to lose 2 neutrons. This is called radioactive decay and we will look at it in more detail next lesson.
