What are alkenes?
Alkenes are another family of chemicals. They are very similar to alkanes. Notice the difference in the end of the name from -ane to -ene.
Alkenes have at least one double bond in them. Double bonds are shown with parallel lines between atoms.
Chemical formula
LAlkenes have a general formula similar to alkanes except they don’t have the two extra hydrogens.
Using the name of the molecule you can work out it’s formula.
Ethene has 2 carbons so the number of hydrogen is worked out by multiplying it by 2, ethene has 4 carbons.
Finding the difference
Alkanes and alkenes both look exactly the same. You can use chemical tests to identify them.
Alkenes react with bromine water and acidified Potassium permanganate because they have a double bond to react with. They both become colourless.
